Don Julio Barrreda started raising alpacas in 1946. When he turned 28, Don Julio took over his family estancia, Accoyo, in Macusani. A self-taught scholar, Barreda scoured books on breeding techniques and genetics, intent on improving the alpaca. Early on, he developed an innovative three-phase plan - selective breeding, improving fleece quality and increasing production - to help him reach his goal. Until he died in 2006, he was regarded as one of the best alpaca breeders in the world.
Don Julio also cared for the people of Peru. He was the first to think up a way to give back to the Quechua people and his idea grew to become our charity, Quechua Benefit.
Since 1996, Quechua Benefit has provided dental care to thousands of children and adults. We have provided shoes, blankets, toys, dental care, and disaster relief for earthquake victims. . Quechua Benefit has supplied schools with needed materials, books, soccer balls, computers and even cash. In 1998, Quechua Benefit financed the construction of a school building in Macusani.
The need is ongoing. Don Julio Berreda called it a "dripping faucet." It never ends but you can help. To donate, go to our Donate / Volunteer section.
